While growing up in the 1950s, I often hung around Mom and Grandma Solberg when they were baking, so very early on I learned by imitation many of the time-tested, old-fashioned ways of Norwegian and North Dakota 'farm' cooking.
Besides having great fun, I picked up kitchen skills that had been passed down to them when they were children. Those precious moments stand out in my mind every time I prepare one of their tried-and-true recipes.
